I’m gonna’ get straight to the point here. Richard Matheson’s book, I Am Legend, did more for vampires (and zombies) than any work of fiction since Dracula.
I Am Legend is short, fast, and every page is fascinating. Matheson isn’t a household name like, say, Stephen King, but he is – without question – one of the most influential writers of our generation. I Am Legend not only brought vampires to a modern era, it is the book that inspired George Romero to write Night of the Living Dead.
Matheson introduced me to a world of literature that is scary, exciting, and thought-provoking. There is absolutely no question that Day Soldiers would never have been written if Matheson hadn’t put me on the path that led me to writing that series.
So rest in peace, Mr. Matheson.
And thank you. For everything.
You truly are a legend.

p.s. If you haven’t read I Am Legend, find it and read it. And no, seeing the movie doesn’t count. Trust me on this.
